Education as a human right is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights given by the United Nations in 1948. According to this declaration, every person has the right to a good education, and local authorities should do whatever is needed to make sure every child gets a free and good quality education. Despite this, there are still millions of children out of school- many people and NGOs have made it their mission to educate those who otherwise wouldn’t get a chance to gain an education.
How does an education transform society?
It fights against poverty- The likelihood of getting a job is higher when you’re educated to a certain level. In fact, it is estimated that the more years of schooling you have, the better your chances of earning a better income. Besides this, it is a proven fact that education helps increase the economic growth of the nation. Across the world, millions of lives have been transformed with better education opportunities for the poor and disadvantaged.
It helps spread the word about environmental protection- Only good education can help people realise how climate change is affecting our lives. This also motivates people to live a sustainable life today without affecting the lives of future generations.
It stops violence- With the help of educational programs, we can help disadvantaged people from taking up arms to become militants. A good education gives people the chance to live a peaceful life where they can earn a good income for themselves and their families. Education also helps solve many other problems facing the poor and disadvantaged.
It gives people access to rights- Many of the poor don’t know what rights they’re entitled to. They are unaware of the government schemes available to them for accessing food, clothing, and shelter. With a sound education, people can understand their rights and can demand their just share of them.
It allows understanding of the world- Many illiterate people are somewhat like the frog in the well. They do not know the opportunities available to them outside their homes and workplaces. With education, many of the poor can train in new vocations and contribute to the betterment of society.
What can you do to help educate the disadvantaged?
Though many are involved in educating the disadvantaged, we can contribute to the betterment of society by donating a small amount every month to them. This could be as little as $100 per month, and this amount could be used to sponsor the education of a child or orphan in Africa or in the refugee camps in Syria or Ukraine.
With Chesed hope for humanity, Dr. Michelle Corral has been working hard to raise funds for her missions across India, Africa, and South East Asia. Giving her a helping hand could help the disadvantaged and the poorest of the poor a chance for a better life, where they can get a decent education and vocational training for self-sustenance.
