Traditionally, society as a whole depended on inequality. The rich grew richer by amassing wealth while leaving the poor with the least resources. It was next to impossible for the poor to upgrade their way of life as they were refused access to quality education, healthcare, and other resources.
Sadly, this status quo remains in human society. Though a lot of progress has been made to improve the lives of the poor, there are still millions of poor across the world who don’t have access to two square meals a day or quality healthcare and education. Why is this so? Why is it that the rich have access to the best resources while the poor languish at the margins of society? This inequality needs to be addressed, it is mankind’s biggest challenge that requires our immediate attention. Thankfully, there are Missions by many organizations like Chesed that aim to bring a change in people’s lives.
As responsible members of society, we must help those who’re less fortunate.
How to address inequality in society?
Quality healthcare for all
For many of the poor, accessing healthcare means traveling for hours to visit the nearest overcrowded healthcare facility. Across the developing world, some doctors are overwhelmed with work while poor patients urgently need medical care. To escape this, many go to expensive private hospitals and take on debt to ensure quality healthcare treatment for all. Though public healthcare is free or heavily subsidized in many countries, it is not enough to cater to the rising demand for healthcare.
Many NGOs and organizations like Chesed are working with disadvantaged communities to set up dispensaries, hospitals, and other healthcare infrastructure so that the poor have access to healthcare and a better chance at survival.
Transparency and accountability in government initiatives
In many places, the government initiatives to help reduce poverty are riddled with inefficiency and corruption, with most of the money intended for the poor turning up in the pockets of the bureaucracy and the political elite. With increased transparency and accountability, the poor have an opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty. Besides this, governments need to encourage entrepreneurship and skill development amongst the poor so that they can stand on their feet and live their lives with a respectable income.
Increase investments in the economy and infrastructure
With a growing population, the world needs a better infrastructure of all kinds- physical as well as services-based. In many developing countries, the infrastructure has not kept pace with the requirements, resulting in overcrowded roads, inefficient transport infrastructure, power shortages, lack of water and other resources, and so on. The governments, along with assistance from various sources are working hard to improve infrastructure and encouraging foreign investments to improve the way of life for the poor in undeveloped regions of the world.
Increase the minimum wage
When it comes to eradicating poverty, one easy way to do so is to increase the minimum wage for lower-level jobs. This could help the poor meet their expenses well and help them live a better life.
How Chesed is helping uplift the disadvantaged?
Chesed is working with disadvantaged people to help them live a better life. For this, they’re providing toys, food, clothing, and other essentials to refugee camps in Jordan, Ukraine, and Uganda while also conducting vocational training camps for orphans and women. Chesed is looking for ways to help more people across the world so that they can uplift their lives.
