For many of the poor living in the countryside in the developing world, getting potable water can be a challenge. Piped drinking water is not available to all, many people depend on community water wells to get their daily water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning.
For millions of poor families living in remote rural areas, their primary wish is to have a local water well. As there are none, many of these poor villagers have to trek for miles every morning to fetch their daily pail of water.
Many a time, the local authorities aren’t equipped to create wells for the people, due to financial constraints or other issues. That’s why a Water Well Project is a godsend for such local people.
How water wells can transform the lives of the poor?
For many poor rural communities, water wells are crucial as the only source of water for their daily use. Without a consistent water source, it is almost impossible to live and grow crops for daily use. Communities who live far away from water sources find it challenging to survive, as a major portion of their time goes into fetching water from the nearest water source.
Sustainable development- When water is easily available through wells, the rural poor don’t need to pay through their nose to gain access to water. For instance, in the absence of water, many rural poor are forced to depend on expensive water tankers which don’t arrive for their daily requirement of potable water.
Socioeconomic development- Studies have shown how access to clean drinking water is essential for eradicating poverty. Without a regular water supply source, many families are forced to task one of their children to fetch water from a far-flung source. This affects their physical well-being, while also forcing them to skip school for this drudgery. Constructing water wells as part of assistance to poor families automatically benefits the entire
community as children don’t need to skip lessons and water is then available to everyone.
Energy and Food production- Water is needed for producing energy and food. In the absence of energy and water, many farmers are forced to irrigate their fields with polluted water, which can lead to waterborne diseases. A water well for a remote village is the first step toward better energy and food production for these poor communities.
Health and Survival- Of course, no one can stay a day without water. If any village is water-stressed, they stay there as long as someone fetches the water. When local water resources get polluted or depleted, many are forced away from their homes or get sick because of contaminated water. A water well is crucial in this case as it makes sure the locals stay at the location and continue their daily work.
